If you like a unique, fancy dining experience, one time Michelin Chef Dylan McGrath’s new haunt; “Rustic Stone” is worth checking out, and if you’re someone traditional who likes something simple and straightforward, be warned. When you get past the initial shock of the menu that looks like a colourful version of the London Stock Exchange leader board, there is an exciting variety of dishes.
You can see that the menu was well-researched. It is written with tongue and cheek comic humour signposting healthy options like cold cucumber and avocado soup to the naughty choices like hamburgers. The blurb before the side dishes goes like this: “many of them are good for you and some are for those who like to be bad." This good research also filters down through to the staff who are very knowledgeable about each dish.
Everything that arrives on to the table is a spectacle, from the breads to the “on the stone” meat options that you must cook yourself. One of our diners is a traditional man and asked could he have his steak cooked for him by a chef, to which the answer was a resounding “no” but with kind encouragement to give it a go. His initial frustration shifted to the kind of glee that a man gets from doing DIY resulting in satisfaction that he could cook such a beautiful steak himself.
Rustic Stone’s motto is “flavour, freshness, nutrition” and it certainly delivers. And if you are not into all the bells and whistles, I would still highly recommend it and “give it a go.”
Rustic Stone, George’s Street, Dublin 2.
