Restaurants...Did You Know?

Food catering establishments are known since the 11th century in Kaifeng, North China. The modern concept of the restaurant emerged only in 18th-century Europe.

A restaurant owner is called a restaurateur; both words derive from the French verb restaurer, meaning "to restore".

Restaurant guides review restaurants, often ranking them or providing information for consumer decisions. In 12th century Hangzhou, signs could often be found posted in the city square listing the restaurants in the area and local customer's opinions of the quality of their food.

According to the Michelin Guide (2008) there are about 160,000 restaurants in Tokyo compared to about 23,000 in New York City and 20,000 in Paris. Tokyo has 191 Michelin stars, while Paris has 98 and New York 54.
